About Outerlands

Outerlands emerged out of the desire to make medical knowledge and services more accessible - especially along the intersection of outdoor and remote recreation. Numerous physical, socio-economic, and psychological barriers exist that prevent folks from safely working or recreating in the outdoors - access to medical knowledge is a large component. Our goal is to decrease barriers to the outdoors by providing tailored and comprehensive medical training.

Our team of certified medical professionals and experienced outdoor educators are dedicated to providing high-quality education. Each course is catered to the particular work and life hazards of the group, offered with numerous course lengths and certifications, crafted with flexible scheduling, and sliding scale fee options to accommodate diverse needs. Every training is a blend of classroom lectures and hands-on scenario practice maximizing learning styles and keeping people engaged as they prepare for the unknown of emergency medical responding.

Founded in Santa Cruz, California, Outerlands operates on Ahma Mutsun, Ohlone, and Miwok land.

“We’re planning a second reunion trip to Point Reyes! We’re keeping the flame alive!” an alumni of last year’s backpacking trip said to me today in the school hallway.

Since our initial backpacking trip exactly a year ago (pictured here) when they attended as juniors, this group of students is now self-coordinating a second reunion backpacking trip before graduation. 🤯🥹

So often people never learn of their impacts. Aren’t aware if the flame they left was fanned and fueled in their absence. If somewhere it still burns hot, or if it flashed and sizzled cold in the dark. We aren’t aware if the seeds we scatter are watered and tended to - if they ever root, bloom, and bear fruit and shade for another generation of wanderers.

It was so sweet to run into two of you again and hear your updates and stories. I can feel the flame in your spirit and am so honored to have been a part of your high school journey.

Have such a wonderful graduation, senior class of 2026. Good luck in your next chapters and keep tending to that flame. You never know what your single spark can become 🔥💗
